Board Games
Alright, so who here likes board games? With the huge variety that's available, I know I can't be the only one here who enjoys sitting around a table and rolling some dice, flipping cards, and moving little plastic pieces around. I compiled a list of our game collection the other night and we've got over 100 now. I want to share the list with everyone, but I'm not quite certain of the best way of going about this because we don't use the spoiler tags. Should I just post it anyway? Does anyone even care?

Go ahead and post it, would be nice to see.

oh my god, my friends and I are board game nerds! We actually have sunday nights designated as board game night. We play games based on Warhammer, Space Marine (also warhammer universe) Battlestar Galactica, a zombie board game called "Last night on Earth" and tons more.
Murg, what games do you play? I'm psyched to see another board game enthusiast
-
Okay, my list has been posted. I play almost all types of board games, I suppose. I don't really care for war games like Risk or complex tabletop games like Warhammer and HeroClix, but I like just about everything else. Trivia stuff is definitely my favorite. And I enjoy card-based games where you get to screw each other over (e.g. Zombies!!!, Munchkin, Family Business, etc.). I have Last Night On Earth, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet because I've been waiting for a decent-sized group.

oh man, Last night on Earth is the best! I got it for my birthday 2 years ago and we still play. We have a few of the add ons and new characters and my friend even won a contest from flying frog because of scenario he made. He also made a set of rules that incorporate the video game left 4 dead and changed special infected to match up the zombies like the smoker, tank, witch etc.
As far as the other games go, I havent played scrabble in a while, but I love it. And as far as monopoly goes, no one ever has the patience to finish a game hahaha
-
I got Last Night On Earth for my birthday two years ago as well. Ha ha. I hadn't actually looked at it until a week or two ago, though. Not sure why; it's just been on the back burner for a long time. But I definitely look forward to checking it out. It almost looks like some kind of cross between Zombies!!! and HeroClix (or HorrorClix, actually). It's great to see that they are in touch with the fans. And that Left 4 Dead scenario reminds me: I really want to see some theme Horde games for Gears of War 3 in the near future. When I was playing the other night, I just thought it would be awesome if they turned it into Plants Vs. Zombies for a few nights. Heh, but that's way off-topic.
A lot of people complain about the length of Monopoly, but it really doesn't have to be as long as people make it. From what I've seen, it appears that almost nobody plays by the official rules. Most people have just adopted whatever they were taught because they don't want to read the whole instruction book. But if you actually go by all the rules, it cuts down on the game's length quite a bit. Property, for instance, sells much quicker when you auction it off like you're supposed to (I've never played with anyone who does this). Also, a lot of people have this crazy rule where you get money by landing on Free Parking? I had never heard of this while growing up, but it's apparently very popular and many seem to think that it is part of the official rules. It isn't, though...Free Parking is just a place to rest and that's it. It's the one space on the board where absolutely nothing happens. The free money rule (which doesn't even make sense) can really increase the length of a game because the chance of going bankrupt drops. Anyway, if you can convince a group of people to play by all of the official rules, I'll bet the game is quite a bit quicker. And if not, you can always get the newer Speed Die version (which we have). There's also the U-Build Monopoly, which is quite a bit different but is the same sort of game. The first time my wife and I played that, I think it took us about 15 minutes...even a long game shouldn't take more than an hour.
By the way, my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Pizza Power Game showed up yesterday. A ordered a used copy off of eBay because I loved this game as a kid (for obvious reasons) and I lost it at some point. Or maybe it was even mine and I had merely borrowed it. Either way, I didn't have the game, so nabbed a copy for about $15. Considering it's almost as old as I am, it's in pretty good shape and it's not missing a single piece. Score!

We don't have anywhere near as many board games and you do, Chris, but we've got a few. Haven't played most of them in years though. Mainly the basics.....Scrabble, Yahtzee, Monopoly (I love that game....rest of the family hates it), Trivial Pursuit (Original and TP 6.....again, I love 'em, family hates 'em....probably because I usually win the trivia games), Connect 4, etc. I've still got my grandma's game of Sorry! too. Used to play that a lot with her when I was little.
Others weren't as popular with us....Pay Day, one called Blarf (not sure what the heck that one is!), even got a little Bingo game with the metal ball cage.
Only other game I have is called Mindtrap. Not really a board game, but more of a "figure it out" type of game. Just cards with mystery scenarios on them that you have to figure out the answer like, for instance, it'll say something about a car accident scene where the victim was tied up in the back of the car and couldn't have reached the gas pedal, yet the car rammed into a tree with significant speed even though no apparatus was found that would have held the gas pedal down. They'll describe the whole scene and you have to pick up on minor clues. Like with that one they said there was a small amount of water in the floorboard, which you're supposed to then deduce that a block of ice was used to hold the gas pedal down, afterwards melting and most of the water then evaporating, making it look like there was no possible way it could have been done. A lot of them are pretty hard and kind of "out there" on the thinking involved and many of them you'll end up going "Pffffttt! Yeah right! Like that would've happened!".
-
Mindtrap sounds pretty interesting, and I totally know what you mean...some of these games give you ridiculous scenarios. You feel like an idiot for not being able to figure out the answer and then when you finally give up, you realize that none of it makes any sense. To Kill A Boss was a lot like that.
I loves me some Trivial Pursuit, by the way, and I'm in the same boat as you: everyone hates playing it because I usually win. I need to replace my lost copy of Disney Trivial Pursuit so my wife can finally have a fighting chance.
Oh, and I just thought I'd mention that we hit up a couple of thrift stores down at the beach (where we went for the weekend) and ended up getting a bunch of "new" board games. I'll post my finds tomorrow after I get a much-needed rest and work up the strength to get everything out of the car trunk.

Went on a mini-vacation to Oxnard over the weekend and managed to grab some goodies at one of the local thrift stores:

(All complete, except for the Horton game which is missing the timer. SongBurst and Scrutineyes had obviously never been played and Anagramania was still sealed.)
I got kicked out of the next thrift store I went to ( Coalition!), but I managed to find an excellent deal on these in the Sears clearance bin:

And my wife picked these up the other night at TRU because they were on sale:

60s vintage board games
Nit sure if this applies to this thread. I remember two games from when I was a kid, and still have them somewhere -- just can't find them because they're packed away somewhere.
Technically not board games since they were played on huge illustrated plastic sheets (huge to a 6 or 7 yeer old at least).
One was "Schmoe (or possiby "Shmoe") and the other was "Beanbag Buccaneers".
Does anyone else remember those? I LOVED those games. I've scoured the internet, but can find no trace of mention of either one.

Ooh, I found a copy of Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? (as opposed to just USA) at Salvation Army tonight for $2. I need to check it in a minute to make sure all of the pieces are there. Completely unrelated, but I also found four Redwall books on tape. I can probably just find MP3's online, but I thought they were cool, so I picked them up.

I don't see the bean bag game for sale anywhere, but here's a somewhat affordable copy of Shmo on eBay:

I just realized something, when you kid gets old enough: you guys will never have a boring rainy day haha between video games and board games: you might be making a board game fanatic along with a video game fanatic.
Also, I always wanted one of the Pokemon board games. I believe they had one for the 1st generation, but I never got to try it. I noticed you had one from a recent generation, so thats why I brought it up.
And I never got into where in the world is carmen san diego. I watched that game show they did tho, taught me a lot of geography haha
-
Yeah, I buy a lot of these games just because I know they'll be fun to play with my son. He'll either end up being a gaming fanatic like me or he'll just flat-out hate games because of me making him play them. Ha.
I haven't played the Pokémon game yet (my wife has no interest), but if it helps, it doesn't actually look all that exciting. Hopefully I'll be wrong, though.
I also haven't played the Carmen Sandiego games yet, but I loved the TV shows and I used to always play the PC game, so hopefully these will be fun as well...even though I really suck at geography. Heh. If we have some free time, I think we'll try one of them out this weekend.
