World of Warcraft is the MMO based off the Warcraft 3 real-time strategy (RTS) game. It also borrows heavily from other Blizzard games like Diablo 2. Starcraft was a sci-fi RTS published by Blizzard in '98, it featured the same resource collecting and base building as the previous game blizzard had developed at the time (Warcraft 2) but made it much more interesting by offering a third race (ground-breaking at the time) and an increased cap on selected units. (9 to 12.) For the record, Command and Conquer didn't ever bother to mess around with unit-select caps and for that I salute the series but I digress.
Where I think people are getting confused and are then confusing -you- is between Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft are very similar in look and style except for the following. Warcraft 3 was a RTS that offered similar base-building as Starcraft but also featured Hero Units. These were larger-than-life characters that gained levels by killing units in opposing armies and picking up items that again increased their skills. In World of Warcraft, you -are- that hero, minus the bases and units and money; for the most part.
