Do any of you guys have a Dell or Alienware machine? What's your take on Dell machines? The coupon above is still good. Let me know what you all play on!

Personally, I've never liked Dell much. They have some of the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. Over the last few years, I have had to talk to many service lines for myself and others and they were the least helpful/cooperative/friendly. The only worse customer service lines I've dealt with are Pearson/CourseCompass, Nielsen Consumer Panels, and Lionhead Studios...but none of those were computer-related, so I guess they don't count.

Their warranty is a joke and I've run into several people who had it expire prematurely (by a few months in some cases). I'm also not a fan of Dell's computers because they use such cheap parts. To be perfectly honest, I have never used a Dell that actually worked properly. And I have trouble trusting a company that is always trying to find new ways to pre-install spyware apps without being detected.

As for Alienware...they used to be decent computers, but I don't know what sort of quality they have since being acquired by Dell a few years ago. But regardless of who owns them, I would never buy one because they are so overpriced. Prices have improved over the years, but you could get the same amount of power for almost half the price with a Gateway or Acer (my Gateway took nearly 5 years to finally start showing its age when compared to other computers on the market). Of course, if you build something yourself, it's even cheaper. I've always seen Alienware as being the Lexus or BMW of computers: they look fancy, but at least 30% of the price is for the brand name.

Some people like them, which is fine because they are decent quality...I just can't imagine paying so much money for one. I mean, for the price of an Area-51 ALX, I could get enough parts on Newegg to make at least two computers with competitive specs and have enough money left over to get fancy towers and enough LEDs to make it shine brighter than Vegas. Heh. Or I could even set up water-cooled PC's, which are pretty neat looking, although water-cooling is a more expensive process (and a bit of a pain).

sorry just now getting back here. been a crazy semester.

your complaints aren't the only ones. over the last two years Dell has been working to address these issues that customers have been experiencing. i totally agree that building your own pc has its own perks, but when you are aiming for convenience at a decent price? dell is hard to beat. all that being said, i appreciate you telling me your opinion. we actually (believe it or not) take opinions like yours and send them up the pipeline to people who can do something to change it in the future.

btw, only about two more weeks on the coupon i posted above!

i've only had one dell and it was ok. but i do have issues with their tech support. i don't mean to sound racist, but they need to get some americans up in there so i can actually understand what the hell is being said. half the time i had to hang up on them because i just got so frustrated due to not being able to understand what they're saying. and it's not just dell either. hp, and acer are the same way. so ever since i've been building my systems, and since i started doing that i've actually had far less issues to sort out.
